Chapter Sixteen

Sloan smiled at the uniformed officers as he set his briefcase on the conveyor belt and walked through the combination metal and magic detector. It beeped like it always did, and he stepped aside for a pat-down and further inspection with a wand.

He was in his lobbyist identity today, Kyle Strang, visiting the Senate building to call upon a Very Important Person. That’s how he thought of the man, with capital letters. Senator Carter Richardson, from the Great State of Nevada. The guard said, “You’ll have to leave the bracelet here.”

Sloan nodded. “Of course. I forgot I had it on. Good luck charm. Only slightly magical, family heirloom, that sort of thing.” He unclasped the illusion detection bracelet, a customized version for him that didn’t look anything like the ones the rest of the ARES teams wore and handed it over.

The guard locked it in a numbered box, then gave him the receipt. “You can get it back from our office when you leave.”

He offered a pleasant, professional smile. “I know the drill. Thanks for keeping us safe, officer.”

The other man nodded, and Sloan retrieved his case from the conveyor belt and headed toward the staircase that would take him to his destination. He’d chosen a tan suit today with a pastel tie, knowing the senator would likely be wearing a dark suit and something bright and bold around his neck. Sloan’s expertise was understanding other people, and usually, his research and instincts matched up with what he got from the magical flash of insight he often picked up from those he met.

It was unique magic, as far as he knew, and a bit unpredictable. Over time, his ability had improved, not through any deliberate effort since he had no idea how to accomplish such a thing, and now he gained deeper understandings and received them more often.

He’d never been in Richardson’s presence, so he had no magical knowledge of him. The campaign videos he’d watched and the records of legislation the senator had championed told him the man was interested in amassing power for himself and using it to advance the causes he passionately believed in. Sloan judged that Richardson was a true believer with no hypocrisy evident in his history.

Lobbyists who tried to buy him off on issues he didn’t believe in got banned from his attention. Sloan was determined not to let that happen to him, which was one of the reasons he’d selected the more passive sartorial option for the day.

He entered Richardson’s outer office, where a thin, twenty-something man with sandy hair in a cheap gray suit rose from behind his desk. Piles of paper surrounding a laptop covered its surface. “Good morning, Mr. Strang. You’re right on time.”

Sloan smiled. “I would’ve been here earlier, but the guards at the front needed a couple of extra minutes to check this out.” He patted the case and gave him a conspiratorial wink. The aide, or secretary, or assistant, or whatever his title might be, wasn’t in on the joke and made an uncomfortable noise in response.
